About Flying Bird
The team at Flying Bird is committed to helping non-profits and social enterprises achieve their most ambitious goals. For insights on how we approach our work, check the feature article published by the Stanford Social Innovation Review, The Promise of Lean Experimentation, co-authored by Flying Bird's Founder. We have a long-track record of successful innovation including:

  • Guiding the team that built Revolution English, an innovative, free (yet financially sustainable) service that teaches English to more than 1 million immigrants.
  • Building and supporting Sierra Club’s Messenger chatbot which grew to 150,000 subscribers in 10 months and consistently achieved click-through and donation rates 500% higher than email.
  • Worked with Accelerate Change, which incubated a number of successful social enterprises including PushBlack, a media service and advocacy organization that recruited 3.8 million subscribers in 2 years.

Steve Nagai-Ma, Flying Bird's Founder, also founded Live Green (which was sold to Green America), ran campaigns which led to the passage of a number of progressive laws, co-produced an award-winning documentary, and was named Asian-American of the Year for his work on campaign finance reform.

Flying Bird specializes in helping changemakers achieve much greater impact and scale through rapid experimentation, data-driven decision-making, earned-revenue generation, and effective digital communications.

We offer three main services:

  • Lean Innovation Introductory Workshop (2 to 6 hours): We will walk you through the groundbreaking Lean Impact process, offer insightful case studies, and support you as you apply these strategies to your specific organizational context.
  • Lean Innovation Workshop and Experimental Sprint (2 to 3 months): We will offer all that is described in the Introductory Workshop and also guide your team through an experimental sprint which includes prototype building, experiments with actual constituents, data-analysis, iterations on your prototype, and more testing with constituents.
  • Lean Innovation Coaching (1-3 hours weekly): As you engage in the Lean Impact process, we will offer you expert guidance on building minimum viable products, designing effective experiments, analyzing data, creating innovation accounting dashboards, and shifting your organization's culture toward effective innovation..

Why the name “Flying Bird”?
Not only do we marvel at the beauty of a bird in flight, but we are also mindful of the extraordinary evolutionary process, with successes and failures along the way, that made that flight possible. Our goal is to engage in a similar (but much faster) process to help your ambitions for social change take flight and soar.
